MSL Music Bench

The Story

The client wanted a music bench sized for the keyboardist and asked that we come up with some artistic features to make it special for the music room. We sketched out the basic dimensional constraints and iterated with the client on style, colors, and different ideas for encoding some music references into the chair. We proposed an inlay design on the seat back representing the vibration of a string with the fundamental wave and the first two harmonics, then had to do some serious R&D to get that technique down. The back features satin-finished, stainless steel tubes that represent a major scale in their spacing (whole and half steps) and in their (wave)lengths, where for example an octave is a halving of wavelength. Since the front scale is smaller, that pattern is a minor scale. Excuse the pun!
